It is with heavy hearts that we are announcing today that the 2021 Julia Creek Dirt n Dust has been cancelled, but travellers in the region can still experience outback hospitality with the Julia Creek Artesian Express race day in April 2021.
The continued risk and uncertainty of COVID-19 has made planning one of the biggest volunteer-run events in Outback Queensland a huge challenge.
A newly appointed committee will look at reigniting and reinventing the community-owned event for the future and are calling on members of the community who wish to assist moving forward to put their hands up and get involved.
New president Nathan James-Laneyrie said the executive committee has spent some time over the past couple of months talking with the council and local community who wish to get involved moving forward.
Whilst this is obviously very disappointing for those who were looking forward to this year's Dirt n Dust, it needs to be put in perspective against Australia’s fight against the Coronavirus, and the wide-ranging impacts of having a totally new committee appointed.
During these difficult times, we all need some hope and we all still have dreams. That is what keeps us going. To keep these hopes and dreams alive, our passionate and dedicated Dirt n Dust committee is now moving forward and focusing on the community planning needed to deliver the best Dirt n Dust Festival in the future.
We have won many awards such as the best festival at the Qld Tourism awards and runner up for the Australian Tourism Awards.
Working with all levels of government we now have a permanent 400K home which is part of the “Julia Creek Community Precinct- Home of the Dirt n Dust.
INFO: Starting its life as a yarn over a round of drinks at the local town and country club, the Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival was imagined as a way to put the small Queensland town on the map. The idea was born to start Australia’s first outback triathlon in 1994 - that year saw 15 people tackle the race and 27 years later the little town of Julia Creek was to attract 3,000 people for a full weekend of events.
